In some ways, yes — both capture your child's early years. Where baby books and journals can feel like homework, letters are less of a checklist and more of a conversation — written to your child, not just about them. Less documenting, more storytelling.

Instead of an elaborate journal that's easy to fall behind on, you're sent one simple prompt each month. Over time, your child ends up with a collection of letters written by you, during years that live mostly in your memory, not theirs — something to open and read when they're older, to understand exactly who they were, through the eyes of the person who knew them best.

Any age throughout early childhood is perfect. The prompts capture stages as early as newborn and extend through the toddler years and beyond.

You'll still receive all the prompts regardless of when you start, and they provide enough flexibility to feel present and honest whether you're writing about moments from the past, what's happening right now, or your hopes for the future.

Absolutely — it makes a truly unique and meaningful baby shower gift for new parents, as well as for growing families. Simply enter the recipient's shipping address at checkout, and we'll send each monthly letter kit directly to them.

The subscription spans 60 letters, providing a complete arc of early childhood. Given that children's autobiographical memory doesn't fully stabilize until age 5, these letters become their story from the years they likely won't remember.

Absolutely. Although we hope you'll complete the full arc of letters, we understand that life happens and circumstances change. Feel free to pause or cancel your subscription at anytime.

For monthly plans, letter kits are non-refundable once shipped, however you may stop future deliveries by canceling your subscription at any time.

For annual plans, because they are billed upfront for the full year, we're not able to offer refunds on them. If you'd rather stay flexible, the monthly plan is a great option.

For gift subscriptions, because they are also billed up front, we're not able to provide refunds.

They do not. In order to reduce the cost to you, we cover the cost of shipping, and send via USPS First-Class Mail. Letter kits typically arrive within 3–5 business days (U.S.), or 1–3 weeks (International).

You'll receive a new letter kit each month, containing a fresh prompt, illustrated art print, reflection card, and everything else you need to write. Kits ship in batches on a weekly cadence, so once subscribed you'll be able to get started before you know it.

We strive to ensure that every letter kit arrives in perfect condition. If yours is damaged during shipping, simply contact us (hello@whileyouarelittle.com) within 10 days of delivery with a photo of the damage, and we'll send you a replacement at no cost. If it is lost, we will also send a replacement out to you at no cost.

Absolutely. A few of the prompts are shown on the product checkout page. There are five general themes: milestones, the present, future hopes, wisdom + guidance, and identity + affirmation. Some will have you reflect on everyday moments, while others encourage you to share family traditions, life lessons, hopes for the future, or the little things you never want to forget. Each prompt is unique, and they grow with your child as they develop, making it easy to build a meaningful collection of letters over time.
